Bargains Followed by Bargains: When Switching Costs Make Markets More Competitive∗†
نویسنده
چکیده
In markets where consumers have switching costs and firms cannot price discriminate, firms have two conflicting strategies. A firm can either offer a low price to attract new consumers and build future market share or a firm can offer a high price to exploit the partial lock-in of their existing consumers. This paper develops a theory of competition when overlapping generations of consumers have switching costs and firms produce differentiated products. Competition takes place over an infinite horizon with any number of firms. This paper shows that the relationship between the level of switching costs, firms’ discount rate, and the number of firms determines whether firms offer low or high prices. Similar to previous duopoly studies, switching costs are likely to facilitate lower (higher) equilibrium prices when switching costs are small (large) or when a firm’s discount rate is large (small). Unlike previous studies this paper demonstrates that the number of firms also determines whether switching costs are proor anti-competitive, and with a sufficiently large (small) number of firms switching costs are pro(anti-) competitive. Costs of Implementation: Bargaining Costs versus Allocative Efficiency
Christian Zehnder, and workshop participants at MIT and Harvard are gratefully acknowledged. Of course, the usual disclaimer applies. 2 A mechanism with low direct cost of use may be preferred to alternatives implementing more efficient allocations. We show this experimentally by giving pairs of subjects the option to agree on a single average price for a sequence of trades – in effect pooling ...
متن کاملA Taste for Bargains
There is a strong intuition among many people that consumers are attracted by bargains. However, a taste for bargains has been difficult to identify. The results of marketing experiments are consistent with consumers having such a taste, but their findings are not distinguished from behavior predicted by standard models in which consumers draw inferences from price. In the present study, I prop...

We examine a search money model in which there is a symmetric coincidence of wants in all barter matches. However, when bargaining outcomes are asymmetric across matches, the barter economy is inefficient. Then a robust monetary equilibrium exists provided that money holders enjoy adequate bargaining terms. Fiat money may be welfare improving. In contrast to the literature, it is the asymmetry ...
متن کاملEconomic Resources, Marital Bargains, and Marital Quality
Under what conditions do spouses have more “voice” or bargaining power to get what they want from their marriages? The objective of this research project is to explore how spouses’ economic resources affect marital bargains and outcomes. The main hypothesis is that spouses with more resources are able to strike bargains about marital roles that they perceive to be more fair and that lead to mor...
